I am so excited because I just found out my 2 paintings above were both accepted into the Cary Gallery of Artists 4th Annual Small Treasures Show! This year's show was juried by acclaimed North Carolina artist Mary Roundtree Moore. The Opening Reception is this Friday night from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and the show runs through March 28th, 2012. The gallery is located in downtown Cary in Ashworth Village, (along with other galleries and shops), if you drop by during March to see the show.

There's a neighborhood cat that comes and visits us at the studio at Wine and Design in Raleigh. He's the biggest, fluffiest cat I've ever seen! AND, he weighs at least 20 pounds! He visited last week when the weather was warmer and we had the doors open. I snatched a photo with my phone and just HAD to paint him~

I enjoy seeing all the different submissions, and of course pushing myself to paint something new!

Unfinished Business

Over the Christmas holiday we visited our families in Virginia Beach. While there, we went to the Chrysler Museum. I hadn't been there since I was VERY young! They have a great Impressionist section and I was able to see a Renior, a Matisse, a Francisco Gras (new to me), and a few others. I left with some inspiration! After some reflecting (see previous post!), I got back in my studio. I came across another unfinished painting and knew it was the next to be finished! It was another of Cathy's photo's from somewhere in Europe- I hope you enjoy~

Hello 2012!

The beginning of a new year is a time to reflect back on the past year. For me, 2011 was challenging to say the least, in many ways, but also full of blessings. I’ve dealt with so many struggles this year, but one lesson I learned was to find the joy in everything- even in the darkest hours. There’s ALWAYS something to be thankful for, even when you’re not feeling very thankful. When the waves came one after the other, and I felt like I was going to drown, my faith carried me through in some amazing ways.

I’ve honestly been struggling a lot with my “new identity” as an artist this year. I was very successful in my past field and didn't realize how much of my self worth was wrapped up in it. Going from being an expert in your field to not knowing anything wore on my confidence, and I'd start longing for the good old days when I knew what I was doing. But the past is gone now and I've decided I’m not looking back anymore. I believe if you're always looking behind you, you can't see where you're going. It’s time to step up and embrace the gifts God gave me and the opportunity He’s given me to use them.

I truly believe I’m entering a new season which will be full of blessings and opportunities. I’m committed to re-focusing on painting, "owning" my gift, being more involved in the industry, exploring other artistic avenues, being content right where I am, doing the best I can, and “preparing for rain”! I’m looking forward to everything God has in store for me this year!

Whether you’re family, a friend, a customer, or someone who just enjoys my work, THANK YOU for all your continued support! My prayer for you is to have an incredible New Year overflowing with blessings!

We love heading out to Fearrington Village every once in a while to wander around the shops, have a bite to eat, and stroll the grounds. I particularly love checking out the newest additions grazing in the pastures- the baby belties! Belties are Belted Galloway Cows, a rare breed of Scottish beef cattle, also called "Oreo Cows". They are so stinkin' cute!

My son Alex requested a painting for his 13th birthday. He really wanted a picture of a wave, and because it was for him, I wanted it to be really special. This was the first painting I'd done in several weeks, and when the inspiration came, it came like a flood! I want it to be a reminder to him that no matter how big the waves seem to be, his faith can carry him through.

So after every paint stroke, I mixed the color again (or changed the first color slightly). It's definitely a challenge that makes you slow down! I thought he turned out cute! Goofy, but cute!

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!

So, the Carol Marine workshop this past weekend was AWESOME! I don't usually paint still life, but now I think I'll have to some because they were really challenging and fun (...mostly!). I had my moments of frustration, like when I bought this really great turquoise bowl to paint and couldn't nail it for anything. The fruit was much more forgiving!

One of my favorite lessons was to paint using one stroke- what that meant was we had to mix our paint color for every paint stroke- not several strokes with one color. It really made me slow down and be more intentional with my technique. I also really enjoyed learning more in depth color theory and all the little tidbits and advice Carol offered.

My next goal is to participate in the Daily Paintworks Challenge. Each challenge consists of an image- either a photo or a painting- and a description of instructions. Participation is as simple as submitting your version of the image. I'll post anything I submit, so be on the lookout!

I painted these on much larger canvas' than I have before. I was concerned about how they'd turn out, but I love them! It's a diptych (one photo split into two). They look great together, but can stand alone.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Kitty

More Tigger! I painted this for my husband's birthday. We have a lamp post surrounded by peonies and liriope, and Tigger used to hide under all the foliage. He would always hang out with Keith when he worked in the yard.

This was a custom painting for the President of the Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club, Art Lynch, in Monmouth Beach, NJ. He celebrated his 70th birthday this past weekend and this painting of his grandchildren was presented to him from the club.
