"A Day with Davis"

Tuesday, December 25, 2012

“Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.

Merry Christmas Ya'll!!!

Currituck Beach Lighthouse Keeper's House

For the last 10 years or so we've been spending our Thanksgiving's with family in the Outer Banks in NC.  One year the house was in Duck and we spent some time exploring the sites in the northern towns such as The Whalehead Club and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.  There was a beautiful late afternoon light on the Keeper's House that we captured in a photo- I tried to capture that in the painting.

I'm still trying to come up with a title for this little sand piper...creative writing is NOT my thing!  :o)

Hand Painted Wine Bottle Lights

I've been having fun making these wine bottle lights!  It's been a long process figuring out the best way to get the bottles to "work" in a way I wanted them to~ and I'm not a very patient person, so it's been quite a journey- ha!  Below are some of my latest creations.  I can duplicate and personalize any of these, as well as come up with a custom design.

They're $35 each and $13 for shipping (if applicable).  Contact me directly at if you're interested in ordering one (or 2 or 3...)  Please allow 2-3 weeks for custom orders.

Thanks and enjoy!

Oh Happiness!

It was late afternoon while on vacation that we took photo's of this brother and sister playing in the surf.  I love the warmth of the late afternoon sun, and they were having so much fun!

Father's Day Gift

My friend Nancy had me paint this as a gift for Father's Day~  I have wanted to paint this for so long because I just loved the photo!  The expression on her son's face is just priceless.  Of course, he's now a 16 year old young "man"!
Thanks Nancy!

Pink Hat

Back from an awesome (and much needed) trip to the beach!  Some sand in my toes and salt air in my lungs is all I needed for some renewed inspiration~ I almost fell out of my beach chair trying to find my camera in time to catch this woman walking down the beach.  Her pink hat was awesome!

Encaustic Lecture

I went to a lecture last night at the VAE on "Encaustic Painting" (painting with hot wax).  Local artist Sharon DiGiulio was the lecturer, and I must say, I enjoyed her as much as learning about encaustics!  She is a hoot~  I learned a lot in the short 2 hours we had, and we were able to play a little bit with the wax.  My creation is above- it was really very cool.  It may be a while before I can delve into encaustics outside of a workshop, but I definitely see it in my future!
I also met another local artist, Bethany Bryant, who's mother, Karen Pearson, I've known for years from my "homebuilding" days.  Bethany works in oil pastels and I've seen her work around town and just love it, so it was fun to meet her and make the connection, too!

There's a neighborhood cat that comes and visits us at the studio at Wine and Design in Raleigh.  He's the biggest, fluffiest cat I've ever seen!  AND, he weighs at least 20 pounds!  He visited last week when the weather was warmer and we had the doors open. I snatched a photo with my phone and just HAD to paint him~

White on White Challenge

"White on White"
This week's DPW Painting Challenge was to paint white objects on white backgrounds to find color and value.  Since I love color so much, especially on "white" things, this was a fun challenge for me! I used the photo provided for my painting.

I painted this from a photo we'd taken on vacation last summer in the Outer Banks (KDH).  Sometimes I feel like we're stalkers when we're taking pictures of strangers! Ha!  I'd wanted to paint him for a while, but the final inspiration to start was the DPW Painting Challenge "The Seated Figure Challenge".  I enjoy seeing all the different submissions, and of course pushing myself to paint something new!

Tuscan Afternoon Hay Bales

I had a strong desire to paint some hay bales last year after being inspired by another artist's work.  This is another one that I started (maybe last spring?) but just couldn't get back to finish.  The play of color was fun!

I'm really feeling inspired this week to finish some paintings that have been lingering around my studio unfinished!  I started this right before the holidays.  Maybe the inspiration came because we drove by Fearrington Village the other day on our way to Chapel Hill???  LOVE that place!

Unfinished Business

Over the Christmas holiday we visited our families in Virginia Beach.  While there, we went to the Chrysler Museum.  I hadn't been there since I was VERY young!  They have a great Impressionist section and I was able to see a Renior, a Matisse, a Francisco Gras (new to me), and a few others.  I left with some inspiration!  After some reflecting (see previous post!), I got back in my studio.  I came across another unfinished painting and knew it was the next to be finished!  It was another of Cathy's photo's from somewhere in Europe- I hope you enjoy~

Hello 2012!

The beginning of a new year is a time to reflect back on the past year.  For me, 2011 was challenging to say the least, in many ways, but also full of blessings.  I’ve dealt with so many struggles this year, but one lesson I learned was to find the joy in everything- even in the darkest hours.  There’s ALWAYS something to be thankful for, even when you’re not feeling very thankful.  When the waves came one after the other, and I felt like I was going to drown, my faith carried me through in some amazing ways.

I’ve honestly been struggling a lot with my “new identity” as an artist this year.  I was very successful in my past field and didn't realize how much of my self worth was wrapped up in it.  Going from being an expert in your field to not knowing anything wore on my confidence, and I'd start longing for the good old days when I knew what I was doing. But the past is gone now and I've decided I’m not looking back anymore.  I believe if you're always looking behind you, you can't see where you're going.  It’s time to step up and embrace the gifts God gave me and the opportunity He’s given me to use them.

I truly believe I’m entering a new season which will be full of blessings and opportunities. I’m committed to re-focusing on painting, "owning" my gift, being more involved in the industry, exploring other artistic avenues, being content right where I am, doing the best I can, and “preparing for rain”!  I’m looking forward to everything God has in store for me this year!

Whether you’re family, a friend, a customer, or someone who just enjoys my work, THANK YOU for all your continued support!  My prayer for you is to have an incredible New Year overflowing with blessings!

With much appreciation,
